Schedule: Fall '08
- Nov 17: Revealing War: The Occupation of Iraq, Unembedded: An Evening with Journalist Dahr Jamail
Winner of the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism, 2008, Dahr Jamail, will report on his many months in
occupied Iraq and will discuss his new book, “Beyond the Green Zone.” With courage and conviction, he will
provide accurate, first-hand information on the reality of life under U.S. occupation. Dahr Jamail’s
unembedded reporting from Iraq, Lebanon and Syria allows an understanding of the conflict in the Middle East
not from a “Western” point of view (although he himself is American), but from “the ground up.”
- Nov 10: “Zero" and "Pretext" Excerpts from the latest films about September 11th will be shown with
commentary from the members of 911 Truth Tucson. There are many aspects of the official account of the
attacks in New York and Washington, DC, on September 11, 2001 that are inconsistent with the large quantity
and high quality of evidence now available. In fact, there is no part of the official story of 9/11 that is
supported by the evidence!
- Nov 3: US Foreign Policy and Political Economy in the Face of Elections In a thought-provoking panel
discussion, UA faculty members will reflect on the current situation in the US, with special reference to the
Middle East and Latin America.
- Oct 27: “Freedom From Abuse of Power: Torture and Unlawful Imprisonment” This film, part of the ACLU
series “Freedom Files,” will be followed by a panel of UA faculty discussing Torture, Violations of
International Law, and the Role of the US Congress.
- Oct 20: “Cocalero” Looking at elections in a South American country from the point of view of the
native people, this film follows the historic rise of Evo Morales from coca leaf grower to Bolivia’s first
indigenous president. It tells a story of geopolitics, people’s movements, indigenous culture, and one man’s
impressive determination.
- Oct 6: "Do Borders Make Peace? Palestine, Israel, and the Struggle for a just
peace" -- Ali Abunimah, co-founder of the Electronic Intifada and author of a new book
called "One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Palestinian-Israeli Impasse," will present
up-to-date information on the conflict in the Middle East. He will discuss the need for a
one-state solution.
- SEPT 29: "THE SHORT LIFE OF JOSE ANTONIO GUTIERREZ" This moving film tells the story of a one-time street kid from Guatemala, who headed North in hopes for a better future, only to become the first US soldier killed in Iraq. He was one of about 32,000 "green-card soldiers" fighting in the US armed forces.
Who is Voices of Opposition? Well, officially we are Voices of Opposition to War, Racism and Oppression. We are centered here in Tucson, Arizona, and our core group of eight or so people organise a political film and lecture series here at the University of Arizona. Hopefully at some point we will branch out to reach Pima Community College and the rest of the community.
Every Monday during the fall and spring semesters, in an effort to present the public with an alternative to the standard media outlets, we present free socially conscious political films and lectures that address the issues that all of us face from day to day, but which our 'leaders' can't seem to solve, our media just doesn't seem to cover, and no one seems to analyze as a symptom of a larger problem. |
